Bolivia has accused European countries of an "act of aggression" for refusing to allow its presidential jet into their airspace, amid suggestions US fugitive Edward Snowden was on board. Bolivia said France, Portugal, Spain and Italy had blocked the plane from flying over their territory. President Evo Morales was flying back to Bolivia from Moscow when the plane was diverted to Vienna. The jet was reportedly searched for Mr Snowden, wanted for leaking US secrets. He was apparently not on board and is still believed to be in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, from where he is seeking asylum in Bolivia and several other countries. Bolivia's UN envoy Sacha Llorenti told reporters in Geneva that he would complain to the UN about the European countries' actions. |
Egypt's army has been holding talks with government and protest leaders, as the deadline it set for a resolution to the mass protests approaches.
President Morsi has rejected an ultimatum to "meet the demands of the people" or face military intervention. He says he is Egypt's legitimate leader and will not be forced to resign. The army says it will issue a statement after the 16:30 (14:30 GMT) deadline expires, and now has control of the state TV building. His opponents say he and the Muslim Brotherhood party from which he comes are pushing an Islamist agenda onto Egypt, and that he should stand down. The Brotherhood has said the army's action amounts to a coup. In a defiant televised speech on Tuesday evening, Mr Morsi said he would give his life to defend constitutional legitimacy, an ... Health officials have counted the bodies of 23 people who died when Morsy's angry opponents met head-on overnight with his supporters at Cairo University. Hundreds more left the clashes with bruises and other injuries, state-funded Al-Ahram news reported, after rocks, Molotov cocktails and bullets flew. Demonstrations elsewhere in Egypt were mostly peaceful, and protest leaders have called for nonviolence. But as a deadline approached on an ultimatum the military gave Morsy this week, the leaders spoke of potential bloodshed. |

Mark Cavendish's dream of claiming his first Tour de France yellow jersey disappeared because of a crash near the end of a farcical opening stage. Germany's Marcel Kittel won the stage, which had a confusing end after a team bus became wedged on the finish line. With the riders less than 15km away, the finish was temporarily brought 3km forward but that decision was reversed when the bus was moved. "The problem was the change in the finish," said Manxman Cavendish, 28. The Omega Pharma Quickstep rider added: "With 5km to go we heard the sprint was in 2km. I didn't crash, I was just behind the crash. "I'm lucky I didn't come down. My team-mate Tony Martin is in a state - he's not in a good way." Early reports suggest time-trial specialist Martin has a suspected broken collarbone. Britain's Geraint Thomas, who predicted in his BBC Sport column there would be "
